News Brief

More on Jon Lindstrom as ATWT's new Craig
"Jon is a witty and immensely likable actor even when he's doing unspeakable things – as he did [playing twins Kevin and Ryan] on GH," says ATWT head writer Jean Passanante. "And that pretty much sums up Craig."

The character will return to Oakdale "with a deep desire to reconnect with his family," adds the scribe, "though his first order of business is to get himself off the hook for trying to kill Paul [Roger Howarth]. It's a big problem, but Craig is up for the challenge."

Irene Dailey: That Exquisite Pain, Aunt Liz

Marlena De Lacroix writes: "Her Aunt Liz on ANOTHER WORLD (1974-86, 87-93) was a most memorable and invaluable supporting character on soaps, the epitome of a provocateur / Pain in the Ass. In other words, if you were a Matthews or a Corey and you were going through some kind of problem or crisis and saw her coming, you knew you were in for a real verbal wuppin’. Meddling was her game and no one, I mean no one, made trouble for characters on soaps better than Irene Dailey’s Aunt Liz. That’s because theater-trained Dailey played Aunt Liz as a living, breathing unhappy human being, not as a cartoon or caricature."

Former ATWT actress Lea Salonga on co-star Peter Parros
"Peter was my on-screen love interest in AS THE WORLD TURNS, one of the longest running soap operas in the US. I played a character named Lien Hughes (originated by Ming Na, the speaking voice of Disney’s Mulan) for three months. When I screen-tested for the role, he was my partner. I guess they wanted to see how we’d look together. He is an incredibly handsome African-American, tall, dark, and really muscular. I think his bicep measured the same as my waist— my waist at the time, anyway.

There was a scene where my character breaks up with his. It was going to be emotionally difficult to do. We made it a point to run the lines over and over again, until they were etched in our minds, so we wouldn’t have to think about them when it came time to tape. Rehearsal time was limited, so we took it upon ourselves to work on our own. The scene was shot in one take with tears streaming down our faces.

Throughout my limited time on the show, he was generous and gentle, and I always knew I’d be safe… in those biceps."

Archer re-signs with OLTL
Melissa Archer (Natalie) has inked a new deal with the show she's called home for seven-and-a-half years. "I renegotiated last Friday," Archer tells Soap Opera Digest. The actress is remaining hush-hush on the terms of her new contract. Hopefully, it's long enough to see Natalie and Jared get out of peril!

Janine Evans to stir up EASTENDERS
Janine Evans is set to make a spectacular return to Walford this Christmas. EASTENDERS' biggest minx – played by Charlie Brooks, 27 – was last seen in April at the funeral of her father Frank Butcher.

"I'm thrilled to be returning to EASTENDERS," Brooks says. "I loved coming back earlier in this year for Frank's funeral. It gave me a taste for playing Janine again. And I'm excited to see what Janine will be getting up to now."

REVIEW: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker writes: "Jumping five years ahead on DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES isn't as futuristic as I'd feared. There are no JETSONS-like robot maids spiffing up Wisteria Lane, only a freshly married Edie (Nicollette Sheridan) looking almost as though, in the fresh glow of her newlywed state, her face and derriere have been remolded with some state-of-the-art doll plastic. Oh, and Edie's hubby is played by Neal McDonough, whose ice-blue eyes always look cyborg-ish — perfectly apt for his character, a chilly self-improvement guru.

But those are the only sci-fi overtones to the time leap, which is there primarily to enable show creator Marc Cherry to plunge into new story lines without a lot of tedious exposition."

Scoop on VIRTUALITY, the first U.S. science fiction series to include gay characters
In the new issue of TV Guide, William Keck shares a few details about VIRTUALITY, a science fiction pilot that Fox is considering adding to their schedule.

VIRTUALITY, which is set in the near future, is about a spaceship on a ten year deep space mission and it just happens to include a gay couple played by Jose Pablo Cantillo and Gene Farber.

Fox's President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly said: "It's a great relationship. It's a very straight forward, honest portrayal. They are front and center. The pilot's story centers around the corporation backing the whole thing and [they] want the [gay couple] to get married. They are the only unmarried couple on the ship and there is a proposal in the [episode]. And the one guy is saying "Are you just doing this because of the corporation? You never wanted to get married before. " And the other guy is saying, "No, this the push I needed. So there is an engagement in the pilot."
