Will GENERAL HOSPITAL Be Axed To Make Room For Katie Couric?

Katie Couric and ABC television are close to signing a $20 million deal which would likely result in GENERAL HOSPITAL's demise, according to TMZ.

Sources connected with ABC tell TMZ -- under the deal that is in the final stages -- Katie would do specials for ABC News, 20/20, and do a significant amount of fill-in work -- including anchoring.

ABC would also give Katie a 1-hour, 5-day-a-week syndicated talk show, that would begin in September, 2012. According to TMZ sources, one option ABC is considering is giving its affiliates back the hour where GENERAL HOSPITAL airs to make room for Katie.

It is also possible THE CHEW or THE REVOLUTION will flop making room for Couric. In a soap fan's dream world, THE CHEW, (AMC's replacement, bombs so badly (we're talking LONESTAR bad) that ABC has to reconsider canceling a surging ONE LIFE TO LIVE. But adding Couric to the mix would all but dash those hopes.

Stay tuned.
