'Dark Shadows' Rises Again as Warner Bros. Animation Develops Adult Animated Reboot

Dark Shadows
One of television's most beloved cult soap operas is preparing for a supernatural comeback.

Warner Bros. Animation has announced that it is developing an adult animated reboot of the classic Gothic daytime drama Dark Shadows, bringing the legendary Collins family back to life for a new generation of viewers.

Originally created by Dan Curtis, Dark Shadows aired weekdays on ABC from 1966 to 1971. The groundbreaking series blended traditional soap opera storytelling with Gothic horror, introducing audiences to vampires, ghosts, witches, werewolves, time travel, and other supernatural elements that helped set it apart from every other daytime drama on television.

At the heart of the series was the tragic vampire Barnabas Collins, whose tortured existence made him one of television's most iconic antiheroes. Over the course of more than 1,200 episodes, the Collins family's haunted history captivated viewers and transformed Dark Shadows into one of daytime television's most enduring cult classics.

The franchise has remained popular long after its original run ended, inspiring novels, comic books, audio dramas, and several film adaptations, including Tim Burton's 2012 feature starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins alongside Michelle Pfeiffer.

According to Warner Bros. Animation, the new series will continue the Collins family saga while staying true to the spirit of the original.

The official logline reads:

"Blending gothic, horror, and supernatural genres, this coming adaptation promises all the dark twists and romantic intrigue that defined the transformational series across its 1200-plus episode run."

Serving as executive producer and showrunner is Lisa Holdsworth, whose previous credits include Dreamers, A Discovery of Witches, and Call the Midwife. Additional executive producers include Cathy Curtis, Tracy Curtis, Eric Homan, Kevin Kolde, and Fred Seibert.

The project was unveiled during Warner Bros. Animation's studio presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming, and Shaleen Desai, Senior Vice President of Adult Series, previewed the studio's upcoming slate of adult animated programming.

The series is currently in development, and no premiere date or streaming home has been announced.

For longtime soap opera fans, the return of Dark Shadows is especially significant. The original series proved that daytime television could successfully blend serialized storytelling with fantasy and horror, paving the way for generations of genre television that followed. Whether you're a lifelong fan who remembers rushing home to visit Collinwood or someone discovering Barnabas Collins for the first time, this animated revival promises to resurrect one of television's most unique and influential soap operas.
