Indie Series Awards Locks Date and Venue for West Coast Debut (Press Release)

Indie Series Awards locks date and venue for West Coast debut

Historic theater in the NoHo Arts District to host awards ceremony

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec. 19, 2013 - HOLLYWOOD -- The Indie Series Awards, formerly known as the Indie Soap Awards, are coming to Los Angeles in celebration of its 5th year on April 2, 2014. The Red Carpet Gala will be held at the El Portal Theatre, a historic landmark in the San Fernando Valley located in the heart of North Hollywood. When it first opened in 1926, the theatre was home to Vaudeville shows, then Silent Movies and Academy Award winning films. Today, the 360 seat proscenium house serves for a multitude of functions including staged plays and readings, special events, plus film and television productions.

The Indie Series Awards, honoring the best in independently produced, scripted entertainment created for the Web, first began in 2009. Doubling in size each year since inception, ISA5 will once again provide the backdrop for New Media creators to celebrate their accomplishments and those of their peers.

“The El Portal Theatre has a long and storied history and I’m so excited to bring the Indie Series Awards to this extraordinary venue,” said Roger Newcomb, founder of We Love Soaps and the Indie Series Awards. “The space also offers us several new and fun possibilities for the ceremony, and there’s not a bad seat in the house.”

Susan Bernhardt, ISA5 Producer added, “As in years past, ISA5 is certain to be a memorable evening and amazing experience for everyone that attends. I'm so thrilled we secured El Portal Theatre as our venue which has literally served every platform. Seems fitting to host an awards show there honoring the best in the latest form of entertainment – New Media.”

The ceremony will be hosted by Emmy-nominated actress, and Best-Selling author Carolyn Hennesy, star of General Hospital, True Blood, Cougar Town, and the upcoming indie web series Acting Dead.

Any professional, independently produced scripted web series (drama or comedy) that released at least three NEW episodes between December 17, 2012 and December 31, 2013 may be submitted for the Indie Series Awards. Complete entry instructions are available at http://indieseriesawards.com.

Tickets for ISA5 go on sale February 1st and will be sold through the El Portal Theatre box office.

ISA4: Michael Caruso Wins Best Writing (Drama)

At the 4th Annual Indie Soap Awards, ANYONE BUT ME creator Susan Miller presented the Best Writing (Drama) Award.

The nominees were:
Anthony Anderson, ANACOSTIA
Michael Caruso, DEVANITY
Sebastian La Cause, HUSTLING
Jason Leaver, OUT WITH DAD
Adam Goldman & Sasha Winters, THE OUTS
Greg Tulonen, Rick Dalton, Karen L. Dodd, Barry Dodd & Jacob Lear, RAGGED ISLE

Michael Caruso won and gave a very funny and poignant speech.
Getting this from her (Susan Miller)...unbelievable. I really was not expecting this. I know everybody says that but I really wasn't. Thank you to Roger and Damon and Kevin for this. I started writing DeVanity because I didn't have the money to pay for therapy. I thought it would be a really nice way to just create something fun. I remember Friday nights growing up the world stopped for my grandmother when FALCON CREST was on. She would not let anything happen until that show was over. I didn't know who Angela Channing was other than she was a crazy old bitch who liked grapes. It was amazing because my grandmother grew up really poor in kind of that other world country, and it was really nice to see her escape for an hour. I always wanted to do something that I thought she would want to watch one day. My grandmother passed away while we were filming Season Two of DEVANITY. Wherever she is I hope she watches my show and isn't too offended by the swearing and all of the disgusting things we do. Thank you very much, this is is wonderful.

Watch it below:

ISA4: Brad Bell Wins Best Actor (Comedy)

At the 4th Annual Indie Soap Awards, HUSTLING stars Sebastian La Cause, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Jessica Press presented the Best Actor (Comedy) award.

The nominees were:
Ben Baur, HUNTING SEASON
Brad Bell, HUSBANDS
Sean Hemeon, HUSBANDS
Dane Joseph, DRAMA QUEENZ
Rob Michael Hugel, I HATE BEING SINGLE
Ed Robinson, PAIRINGS

Brad Bell won and gave one of the most memorable speeches of the night.
Oh crap, I really should have written a speech. And earlier I won for writing so the irony is not lost on me that I didn't write anything. This is the second thing I've ever won in my life. This really means a lot because I think some people look at the character of Cheeks as a stereotype or caricature or something two-dimensional. What I really wanted to do with this script and this story was to show that even if you have stereotypes, even if you are feminine and have long eyelashes, or you love Madonna, or you sashay down the street, it doesn't mean that you're not a fully developed human being and you don't have depth or dimension. My femininity is actually what gives me strength. It is not a weakness. To Jane Espenson and Jeff Greenstein, who directed a performance that I never would have delivered on my own, and my co-stars Sean Hemeon and Alessandra Torresani, I would not have been able to deliver without them giving me that energy, thank you. And really thank you so much for this. This means a lot to me.

Indie Soap Awards History and Archive

After an interview with EMPIRE's Greg Turner and Brian Hewson in June 2009, We Love Soaps founder Roger Newcomb coined the term "indie soap" and began producing the Indie Soap Beat segment for the We Love Soaps Radio podcast that aired at the time. Later that year, as a way to bring attention to the talented groups and individuals who were creating serialized scripted content for the web, We Love Soaps created the Indie Soap Awards.

When the first Indie Soap Awards nominations were revealed on January 6, 2010, it was unclear how the web series community would react, would anyone even notice? But the response was instant and overwhelming.
