Aaron Sorkin, Aaron Spelling, Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams: All great auteurs, with distinct voices and visions, who left indelible marks on television. All genuinely brilliant in their own ways. All deserving of auteur status. And, of course, all white men.
What makes this disconnect even more shocking is that these days, strong leading ladies are THE thing, especially on cable. And yet a large number of TV’s most commanding female characters are being created and shaped by … men.
Former Hollyoaks star Sarah Jane Buckley has spoken of the challenge faced by older actors in the teen soap. The actress, who played twisted mum Kathy Barnes, said the shorter amount of time allotted to the storylines makes it harder for the adults to play out their plots convincingly. She said the soap's producers "struggled with the adults" in terms of screen time, adding: "They find it hard to show the journey you go through sometimes."

"Plenty of bad executive producers lorded over GUIDING LIGHT before Ellen Wheeler got there. Their names were Michael Laibson, Paul Rauch, and Jill Farren Phelps. They killed off popular characters, ordered ridiculous stories, and, in particular, went so far to clone the show’s main character. Yes, that’s right, human cloning, And no one at Procter & Gamble, which owns the show, had the good sense to stop them."

Y&R's Clementine Ford spoke on the lack of another Otalia kiss.
I think it’s all so ridiculous at this point. People can do some vial, horrible things to people on television today, but you can’t have two people of the same sex kissing on daytime? I mean, what planet do they think the daytime audience lives in? They need to have more respect for the daytime audience. They are smarter than they think. I had heard a bit about the Otalia storyline, but I did not know they had not actually kissed! Unbelievable!
Kim Zimmer discussed taping the last show and the new production model.
I had a moment of, 'Thank God its over,' because it’s been hard. I was never a fan of the new format and production module, and trying to generate story, was tough. And Thank God for Olivia and Natalia. It was the only love story we had on the show, because every one of the other characters on the show seemed to hate each other and it was nasty. I think that is one of the reasons that story was so well received by bible belters because it was a love story. We were thirsty for something like that.
The only love story?? What about Bill and Lizzie, Vanessa and Billy, Dinah and Shane (even though they did not end up together), Remy and Christina, Buzz and Lillian? Did I miss anyone? I don't think KZ was watching the show.

ReplyDeleteFRIEDMAN: GUIDING LIGHT Murdered, and There’s a Killer
ReplyDeleteFinally someone has the guts to say what most Guiding Light fans think.
I think by love story she meant that it had been in progress for a year. I can't see how she forgot Bill and Lizzie though that had been in the making for a while. But Dinah and Shayne were a quick get together and it feels like they just remembered Billy and Vanessa together at the last minute.
ReplyDeleteWhile certainly there is a majority of white male creator/producers, there are also figures like Irna Phillips, Agnes Nixon, and Tyler Perry.
