Michael Muhney announced on Twitter that he has been let go from THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, where he has played Adam Newman since 2009. "I'm so sorry," he wrote. "It breaks my heart to say this, but I was just let go from Y&R. My last day on set is this Thursday. My last air date will be Jan 30th. I'm going to take some private time with my wife & kids, as I am most concerned for their well-being…I have 3 final episodes to film, and because they are my last, I will be giving it everything I have. More details will follow... #xoxoxo"
Muhney took over the role of Adam from Chris Engen, who abruptly left the show in 2009.
Coincidentally, Billy Miller's will also air for the last time as Billy Abbott on January 30, 2014. Billy and Adam were recently voted the two favorite characters in our fan survey about the state of Y&R.
UPDATE:
I'm hearing there is much more to this story than simply an actor being dismissed for the usual reasons (storyline dictated, change of direction, etc.). Fans have been blaming executive producer Jill Farren Phelps but did this decision come from way above her head? She may not have had a say in the matter.
Doug Davidson, who plays Paul on Y&R, tweeted the following: "Honestly, JPF's is not to blame. She is terrific. Today's events don't reflect her leadership. Trust me, there is more to the story. The Young and the Restless is a team sport."
Muhney's Monday tweets about his firing were his first since November 5th when he tweeted, "Have a safe & happy holiday season and a happy New Year! See ya'll in 2014! #xoxo"
Was there a backstage reason he was signing off for the year in early November? Apparently Muhney being fired was a result of something that happened weeks ago, and it was not a surprise to those in the know.
Muhney follows 28 people on Twitter as of today, and none of them are Y&R cast members.
