Today in Soap Opera History (July 5)

1976: Ryan's Hope's Delia talked her way around Frank's suspicions.
1999: Passions premiered on NBC.
2001: As the World Turns' Simon found Katie on an island.
2002: Stephanie Gatschet debuted as Tammy on Guiding Light.

1966: On The Guiding Light, Bert Bauer (Charita Bauer) met Leslie Jackson (Lynne Adams).

1966: New head writer William J. Bell's first Days of our Lives script aired. By this point NBC had canceled Ted Corday's other two daytime soaps launched in 1965, Morning Star and Paradise Bay, but gave Days another chance to increase its ratings, and it slowly did. Sadly, Ted Corday passed away a few weeks later though before seeing Days reach its ratings peak over the next decade.

1968: On Another World, Rachel Matthews (Robin Strasser) was rushed to the hospital.

1971: On The Doctors, Dr. Nick Bellini (Gerald Gordon) shared a kiss with Nurse Cathy Ryker (Nancy Barrett).

1966: Dark Shadows premiered on ABC.
1984: Guiding Light's Bert stood after losing her leg.
1995: One Life to Live's "Tommy" was enraged.
2003: Passions paid homage to the musical "Chicago".

1955: On The Brighter Day, Lydia Hamilton (Murial Williams) struggled with her conscience after taking a silver clock.

1963: On Ben Jerrod, Agnes (Jeanne Baird) lost her temper for the second time.

"My name is Victoria Winters. My journey is beginning - a journey that I hope will open the doors of life to me, and link my past with my future. A journey that will bring me to a strange and dark place - to the edge of the sea high atop Widow's Hill - a house called Collinwood. A world I've never known, with people I've never met. People who tonight are still only shadows in my mind, and who will soon fillthe days and nights of my tomorrows."

Six months into the Dan Curtis-created show's five year run, ghosts were introduced and then other supernatural elements which helped the afternoon soap opera become a favorite among younger viewers.

1983: Guiding Light's Phillip and Beth spent New Year's Eve in New York.
2002: The "Surrender" arc began on Port Charles.
2003: One Life to Live's Dorian visited All My Children's Pine Valley.

1963: ABC shifted General Hospital to the 3 p.m. ET time slot after nearly 9 months of airing at 1 p.m.

1964: On Another World, Pat Matthews (Susan Trustman) refused to give John Randolph (Michael M. Ryan) permission to access her medical records.

1968: NBC daytime soap opera Hidden Faces premiered. Created by Irving Vendig, the show aired in the 1:30 p.m. ET time slot, replacing Let's Make a Deal as the lead-in for Days of our Lives. The cast included Conard Fowkes, Louise Shaffer, Conard Fowkes, Rita Gam and Linda Blair. The series only lasted six months. Click here for more on this classic soap.

1971: On The Doctors, Dr. Karen Werner (Laryssa Lauret) asked Dr. Matt Powers (James Pritchett) to help her with the purchase of a new car. Dr. Maggie Powers (Lydia Bruce) was not happy to hear her husband had just left the hospital with Karen.

1980: On Another World, Russ told Tracy that he had been offered a new position at the hospital and it meant even more work, which led to an argument about how both their careers will take them away from each other.



1983: On Guiding Light, Beth Raines (Judi Evans) and Phillip Spaulding (Grant Aleksander) spent New Year's Eve in New York.

1983: On General Hospital, Edward Quartermaine (David Lewis) introduced Vanessa Raphael (Tracy Brooks Swope) to Gail, Audrey, Bobbie and Ruby. Edward later told Vanessa he wanted to invest in her spa business.



1985: On Santa Barbara, Brick Wallace (Richard Eden) found out Channing Capwell Jr. was the baby in the photo switched with him, meaning he was the son of Sophia and Lionel.

1999: On As the World Turns, Georgia Tucker (Jamie Dudney) bailed on Carly (Maura West) and Barbara's (Colleen Zenk) New Year's Eve fashion show. She was later revealed to be the person who killed Alec Wallace.

2002: Actor Antony Ponzini died at age 69. His soap roles included Vince Wolek in One Life to Live, Danny Fargo in Another World, Tony Wyatt in The Edge of Night, Tony Perelli in General Hospital, Lucas Gates in Rituals, Victor Borelli in All My Children and Captain Corelli in Generations.

2002: The "Surrender" arc of Port Charles began. The special 60-minute episode included Rafe (Brian Gaskill) and Alison's (Erin Hershey Presley) wedding which came to a halt when evidence surfaced that they could be brother and sister. Meanwhile, Caleb (Michael Easton) and Elizabeth (Rebecca Staab) were married, and Livvie (Kelly Monaco) and Tess became one. When Caleb left Elizabeth alone on her wedding night to see what happened, she turned Ian (Thorsten Kaye) into a vampire.



2003: On All My Children, Dorian Lord (One Life to Live's Robin Strasser, who played Christina Karras on AMC in the 1970s) plotted with Adam Chandler (David Canary) about the Paul Cramer (Brock Cuchna) and Babe (Alexa Havins) situation.

2005: UK's Family Affairs ended after and eight and a half year run.

2009: On One Life to Live, Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell) and Oliver Fish (Scott Evans) made love.



2010: Actor Michael Allinson died at age 90. His soap roles included Ian Russell in Love of Life and Nelson Maxwell on Another World.

1952: ABC Radio aired the final episode of LONE JOURNEY after a 12 year run on multiple networks with multiple sponsors.

1955: On THE BRIGHTER DAY, Lydia Hamilton (Murial Williams) struggled with her conscience after taking a silver clock.

1966: DARK SHADOWS, created by Dan Curtis, debuted on ABC. Six months into the show's five year run, ghosts were introduced and then other supernatural elements which helped the afternoon soap become a favorite among younger viewers.

On this date in...

1963: ABC shifted GENERAL HOSPITAL to the 3 p.m. ET time slot. It had previously aired at 1 p.m.

1964: On ANOTHER WORLD, Pat (Susan Trustman) refused to give John (Michael M. Ryan) permission to access her medical records.

1968: NBC daytime soap opera HIDDEN FACES, created by Irving Vendig, premiered.  The show aired in the 1:30 p.m. ET time slot, replacing LET'S MAKE A DEAL as the lead-in for DAYS OF OUR LIVES.  The series only lasted six months. Among the stars were Louise Shaffer, Conard Fowkes, Rita Gam and Linda Blair. Click here for more on this classic soap.
