'General Hospital' Among 12 Sentinel Award Honorees

"Sentinel Awards last night with theses powerful women," tweeted
General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini.
As the entertainment landscape expands and programs continue to push boundaries, TV storylines that inform, educate and motivate audiences to make choices for healthier and safer lives are more important than ever. Now in their 19th year, the 2018 Sentinel Awards are presented by Hollywood, Health & Society (HH&S), a program of The Norman Lear Center at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. The 12 outstanding Sentinel Awards honorees for 2018 spotlight a wide range of topics that include nuclear safety, maternal health, HIV/AIDS, autism, sexual assault, mental health and disabilities. The honorees were recognized at a red-carpet event on Wednesday at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood.

Entries were submitted from broadcast networks, cable channels and streaming services. All eligible submissions were reviewed for accuracy by experts from the CDC and partner organizations; a second round of judging looked at the entertainment value and potential benefit to the viewing audience.

“Entertainment television is a powerful resource for information, and compelling storylines can motivate millions of viewers worldwide,” said Kate Langrall Folb, director of HH&S.

Martin Kaplan, director of the Lear Center and HH&S’ principal investigator, said: “We’re delighted to shine a spotlight on writers and producers who entertain viewers and at the same time provide them with accurate information. We hope the shows and storylines we honor will spur other writers to recognize and use responsibly the power they wield.”

NEWS: Peter Reckell, Disney Subscriber Losses, 'Empire' Online Store, Bryan Cranston

Peter Reckell on shooting the death of Bo Brady on Days of our Lives
“What’s keeping me from saying, ‘Killing Bo? That’s not a good idea,’ is … what I discovered over the past three years, and that is being a dad,” Reckell tells Soap Opera Digest. "And the important role I have in my daughter’s life…. As important and as wonderful and inspirational as being Bo Brady is, this job of being Loden’s dad is more important to me at this time.”

Being Mary Jane is redefining single womanhood
Creator Mara Brock Akil intentionally kept her title character single. "The working title of this was Single Black Female, because sometimes we’re reduced to those three words,” she says.

Jane the Virgin's is portraying a radically frank depiction of early motherhood
“The truly radical thing about this season of Jane the Virgin,” says Kathryn VanArendonk, "has been how much of these first episodes have been about the unavoidable, unglamorous, and absolutely life-consuming physical reality of new motherhood. Jane Villanueva uses a breast pump. Frequently. She worries about her milk supply. Her body does not bounce back instantly. She is exhausted, and her baby’s presence is a new constant in her life.”

NBC is developing a college sex scandal drama
Fated will revolve around a sex scandal connecting the university’s president and head football coach, who are brothers.

Robert Rorke complains that primetime's "high brow" dramas are turning into daytime soap operas
The New York Post writers says: "Bringing characters back from the dead? That’s the kind of plot device usually found on daytime drama to goose ratings and arouse sleepy fans. So when did shows such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead become soap operas on par with Days of our Lives, which famously brought back notorious villain Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) from the grave, or The Young and the Restless, which killed off Adam Newman and revived him — with another actor (Justin Hartley) playing the role?"

Disney Suffers Severe Cable Subscriber Losses
The Walt Disney Company has lost 7 million subscribers to its cable networks in the last two years, according to a regulatory filing posted by the company Wednesday. Among the networks posting losses is ESPN, which at 92 million subscribers is down from the 95 million reported in 2013. Disney Channel, Disney XD and ABC Family, all Disney-owned, each had 4-5 million lost subscribers over the two year period, according to the company’s annual 10K report.

FOX has launched the official Empire online store
The store, which boasts show-inspired apparel (like a skirt-and-crop-top outfit and colorful jersey dresses), show quote tops ("Porsha, get my damn shoe!"), and more items. To celebrate the opening, Fox is hosting a contest that includes a $1,000 shopping spree to shop the store. (For those who don't win, there's still good news: the store's currently running a sale, with items up to 40% off!)

Bryan Cranston Cries While Watching Emotional Breaking Bad Clip: "I Saw My Daughter's Face"
On Wednesday's Inside the Actors Studio, Bryan Cranston got emotional when explaining his thought process behind a pivotal Breaking Bad scene.

On the James Lipton-hosted Bravo show, Cranston watched a clip of his character, Walter White, choosing not to help save Jesse Pinkman's (Aaron Paul) girlfriend Jane (Krysten Ritter), instead letting her choke on her own vomit. According to Cranston, shooting the scene was surprisingly tough on him.

Jane (Gina Rodriguez), Alba (Ivonne Coll) and Xo (Andrea Navedo).
One of last season's best new shows, Jane the Virgin, kicks off its sophomore effort tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, following the premiere of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. If you're looking for a serial that is well-written, superbly acted and is full of heart, I can't recommend Jane enough.

Empire ratings dip in the fast nationals but still huge
FOX's Empire scored 13.7 million viewers and a 5.4 adults 18-49 rating (last week 16.2 million, 6.7 rating). ABC's Nashville was steady with 4.8 million viewers and a 1.2 A18-49 rating (last week 4.9 million, 1.2 rating).

I Ain’t No Snitch: The Worst Thing You Can Do on Empire Is Tell the Truth
Writes Dave Schilling: "It’s not a stretch to call the characters on Empire duplicitous. This is a soap opera, after all. On soaps, people lie like dogs lick themselves: whenever they have a free moment and a bit of privacy. But other than The Sopranos, I can’t think of a series more preoccupied with the unassailable benefit of deceit and the code of the streets. Lies, and the consequences of duplicity, are the fuel that makes this show move forward."

FX releases American Horror Story: Hotel poster
Writes Chris Harnick: "American Horror Story: Hotel has released its character poster featuring the tenants and employees of the creepy hotel at the center of the series. There's Lady Gaga's The Countess with her hair–dress combo, Angela Bassett's Ramona looking fierce, Kathy Bates' Iris tending the desk (probably plotting something nefarious), Matt Bomer and Finn Wittrock looking pretty damn fine, creepy kids, Denis O'Hare in a dress and so much more. We'll leave you alone for a few minutes to stare at the image."

Robert Knepper joins Twin Peaks
Knepper has been tapped for a recurring role on the new season for Showtime alongside fellow new addition Amanda Seyfried.

The Fosters star Sherri Saum to guest on How to Get Away with Murder
A HTGAWM rep confirmed Saum's casting, but declined to provide any details about her character. Saum previously starred in daytime soaps One Life to Live and Sunset Beach.

Rob Lowe on The Grinder, Why Network Comedies Can Compete With Cable, and the Objectification of Men
"We did a whole sequence of why he left The Grinder. And the reason he left is he felt objectified. People go on and on about the objectification of women, and rightly so. But what about the objectification of men? When was the last time you saw Grey’s Anatomy? So what I love about this show is these wry, insightful looks at contemporary culture in entertainment as seen through the eyes of a regular Idaho family because they have a conduit to it in my character."

HBO denies racy Westworld casting notice came from them, vows to rectify it
Background players on HBO’s Westworld have had to sign consent forms agreeing to participate in “graphic sexual situations”, including “genital-to-genital touching” and posing “on all fours while others who are fully nude ride on your back”. But HBO said the "document that the background actors were given was created by an outside extras casting vendor."

HBO’s statement comes after my colleague David Robb reported today that a rare explicit casting requirement resulted in the rare step of a SAG-AFTRA representative being on the set to monitor the situation and make sure it conformed to the union’s Television Agreement.

Genes medical soap based on a Michael Crichton script set at CBS as put pilot

Making things more complicated, the doctor begins to fall madly in love with her.

British soap Emmerdale to air "Who Shot Robert Sugden?" flashback episode
In case you missed it, Robert got his just desserts after killing his brother Andy’s wife earlier this year, and it didn’t take long for a mystery character to decide that they’d had enough of his nasty ways - shooting him in the chest and leaving him fighting for life.

Rob Morrow and Kellli Williams join The Fosters
Williams will play Justina, a well-connected foster-care specialist who proposes a significant investment in Callie’s “Fost and Found” website. Morrow will play Will, a liberal-minded free-spirit who is introduced to the Adams Foster family through Stef’s mom, Sharon, played by Annie Potts.

Adam Rodriguez joins Jane the Virgin
The CSI: Miami alum will recur as Jane's critical writing professor.

Serial podcast is becoming a TV drama series
Chris Miller and Phil Lord — the duo behind The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street and The Last Man on Earth — have optioned the rights to make a cable drama that would follow the making of the NPR podcast as it takes on a case. The Hae Min Lee case won’t, however, be part of the proposed TV series.

David Anders to return to Once Upon a Time as Dr. Whale, AKA Victor Frankenstein
The iZombie star tweeted that “The Doctor Will Be In."

The Young and the Restless star Jess Walton remains humble
Writes Roger Bluhm: "Most people who achieve fame remain humble. Jess Walton, the actress who played Patricia and married Buck Taylor's character, had me laughing hard in my interview with her prior to Wild West Fest. She was on a layover at an airport in Portland, Oregon and we talked for almost an hour. She's spent 30 years playing the same character on a soap opera and knows she's been fortunate in her career."

I’m really looking forward to it.” She said she didn't know the long-term plan for the character, reporting, "Frank [Valentini, executive poducer] gave me a call and said, ‘This is what’s happening initially,’ and that’s all I know.
